Environmental Health and Pollution Regulation

Protection of public health, ecosystems and the environment from potentially polluting activities is an important issue in Guernsey and this is the primary role of the independent Director of Environmental Health and Pollution Regulation. The Director of Environmental Health and Pollution Regulation is appointed by the Policy Council to undertake the requirements of the Environmental Pollution (Guernsey) Law 2004 and to ensure that pollution is prevented or the risk minimized to acceptable levels.

The Environmental Pollution (Guernsey) Law, 2004

The Environmental Pollution (Guernsey) Law, 2004, (the Law), was Registered on the Records of the Islands of Guernsey on the 4th October 2004.  A copy of the Law can be found in the download section of this page.

The purposes and objectives of the Law are set out in Part 1, namely:

"The purposes of this Law are to empower the States to enact, monitor and effectively enforce all such measures as may be conducive to the preservation and enhancement of the environment through the limitation and reduction of pollutants therein, and;

The primary objective of this Law is to ensure that activities which may give rise to risk of environmental pollution -

(a) are only carried on if and to the extent that the interests of the community so require; and

(b) are carried on, if at all, using the best available techniques for eliminating or reducing to the minimum any such risks."
